At the 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival, Fierce Backbone presented the world premiere of WAITLESS, a dramedy written by Cailin Harrison, directed by Reena Dutt. During the Fringe, WAITLESS was selected as an ENCORE! Producer’s Pick.
Shelly and Trent, a young couple in love, have made it out of the American South to New York City and everything seems to be going well… until Trent gets the offer of a lifetime. Suddenly, life's a run on a treadmill when Shelley and Trent take the plunge and move to London, where they are challenged to find the right pace to discover if their love can go the distance. The play addresses the loss of identity and self- worth in this two person show about living abroad without the ability to work. Allowing the audience to peer into the privacy of a married woman's life, WAITLESS leaves the audience running toward the future, with very little left behind.

Reviews and reactions to the 2014 Hollywood Fringe production:
“Internal dramas are notoriously difficult to stage — especially the ones that focus on a gradual evolution of intent rather than a series of noisy confrontations between characters. Cailin Harrison traces her main character’s journey with imagination and subtlety.” – Marie De Varennes “Clearly deeply personal, the writing swept me away as I tried to think about what it would be like to be in the actress’ place. It was very easy to empathize with the two characters. You could feel the despair, loneliness and the futility of the struggle. Not for one moment did I look at my watch- it seemed like time flew by.” – Brent Curtis “Subtle, sophisticated, funny, complex…Cailin Harrison has written a brilliant script beautifully brought to life …” – Leslie Hardy Select audience reviews: “It is rare that I see a play in which every, single, minute, I am engaged and waiting for the next moment to unfold…” “…charming piece of theatre…” “The directing is top notch – excellent visual storytelling that captures the claustrophobia, the desperation, and the love under it all.” |
WAITLESS's world premiere was produced by Fierce Backbone and was a co-production with director Reena Dutt’s company, Off-Chance Productions. The 2014 Fringe cast featured the talents of Andrew Boyle and Laura Emanuel. WAITLESS ran throughout June into July at the Lounge Theater in Los Angeles, CA, USA. |
